Bad Breath & Halitosis Busters – Dr. Pia on Fox 5

Permanent bad breath or halitosis can come from a number of serious issues such as oral infections, periodontal disease, or gastrointestinal disorders. Cosmetic Dentistry NYC CEO, Dr. Pia Lieb, shares tips to practice good dental hygiene to combat bad breath.

– Combat Bad Breath with a Peroxide, Baking Soda, & Saltwater Mouth Rinse

There are bacteria in your mouth that lie on the tongue, tissues and in between your teeth that can cause bad breath. A peroxide, baking soda, and salt rinse will neutralize, and kill the odor-causing bacteria to eliminate bad breath. Make sure not to swallow!

– Take Antiacids to Fight GI Complications

Antiacids could help combat bad breath caused by serious gastrointestinal complications. However, you should see your MD to have this checked if bad breath persists for over a month.

– Chew Parsley to Eliminate Bad Breath

Chewing parsley is a natural alternative for neutralizing odors in the mouth.

– Floss Daily

Flossing is not only important but it’s great for reaching the plaque that accumulates between the teeth.  There is no way to remove plaque that accumulates interproximal with a plain toothbrush, you are only cleaning the surface of the tooth. So it’s vital to floss daily in those hard to reach areas!

– Use Tongue Scrapers for a Fresh & Clean Feel

Tongue scraping is a great addition to your oral care routine. It is recommended to brush your teeth first, floss, then brush with toothpaste on the tongue, rinse your mouth out and then scrape with a tongue scraper to keep it feeling fresh and free from bad breath. We recommend using a hard scrapper but you can use a soft one as well.

– Practice Good Dental Hygiene Consistently

It’s recommended to spend at least 2 minutes every time you practice your oral care routine to ensure proper dental hygiene.
